At the Feet of Jesus! Such an amazing topic to explore. Last week we looked at a story in Matthew 15 where a mother was crying out to Jesus to help her daughter. She was at the feet of Jesus.
I find this very interesting. So many times, in my life I have found myself at the feet of Jesus. Maybe not literally like these two women and not like the people we will read about today but in my heart.
I know for me it has been a submission of myself over to a God that holds the stars in place and calls them by name.
It has been the crying out of a momma to the One who knits us together in our mother’s womb and has known us before the foundations of the earth.
It has been the shame being poured out to the one who has constantly and consistently overflowed my cup with His grace and mercy.
Know therefore that the LORD your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commandments. Deuteronomy 7:9 NIV
Covenant Love lavished on us for a thousand generations. That is a legacy I want to be a part of. A legacy I want to pass on to my family and others. So, I give you another story where we see people at the feet of Jesus.
After Jesus, had left the Canaanite woman, He went along the Sea of Galilee. Then he went up on a mountainside and sat down. Great crowds came to him, bringing the lame, the blind, the crippled, the mute and many others, and laid them at his feet; and he healed them. Matthew 15:29-30 NIV
First, I would like to point out Jesus’ posture in a couple of these stories. Notice He was sitting.
So many times, something happens in our lives. Things unexpected. Things that cause us to get upset and leave us worried and we wear a hole in the floor pacing back and forth with anxiety. Christ has a great crowd gathered around with countless sick and broken people and He is sitting. I love that! How about you?
This is a great crowd, it becomes a crowd of at least 4000 men plus women and children.
The people are bringing their loved ones to be healed at the feet of Jesus and He heals them.
You may be saying here, well I have brought my illness or brokenness to the Lord and He has not healed it. I cannot say why God has not chosen to heal all who seek it. But we can see here, this amazing display of grace upon grace to all who came was to show the pure power of an Awesome God.
This was a pure witness and testimony to His authority over life and the detriment of this world. Diseases that to this day do not have a cure or a “known” cause but they are subject to His power. He rules over all and is the rule breaker of all that we know that complicates the human body.
The people were amazed when they saw the mute speaking, the crippled made well, the lame walking and the blind seeing. And they praised the God of Israel. Matthew 15:31 NIV
The people were amazed and understandably so. Blind now seeing. Crippled instantly walking. Mute people praising the great name of Jesus.
I wonder who was impacted more by this. The onlookers, the families, or the ones who were healed. I wonder who made it a regular practice to bring their problems or life’s situations to the feet of Jesus.
Sometimes people believe if they could only see a miracle or witness the works of God, how much easier it would be to believe.
John 12:37 says: Even after Jesus had performed so many signs in their presence, they still would not believe in him.
Matthew 15:31 tells us when the people saw these miracles they were amazed and praised the God of Israel. But I wonder if they believed in Him. I wonder if it transformed their lives enough for them to put their faith and trust in Him or if they just stood there in amazement and eventually went on with their lives?
Have you witnessed a miracle of Christ? Has it changed you? Has it caused you to put your life in His hands? Has it given you a reason to return to His feet with your whole heart or were you there in amazement singing His praises only to seem unmoved by it in days and weeks and years to come?
We see in the next verses that Jesus had compassion on these people and in another miracle, feeds them all.
Christ wants us to be moved when we see His many signs and wonders but more importantly, He wants to change hearts and change our lives. That is one of the greatest miracles we could ever be of witness to.
